Strategic Alignment Watch
The Corporate Weather Network has issued a Strategic Alignment Watch for all organizational regions. Atmospheric conditions are currently favourable for the development of strategic alignment events. Residents should be prepared for the possibility of alignment meetings, alignment documents, and the phrase "we need to align on this" appearing with increased frequency.
Watch vs. Warning
A Strategic Alignment Watch means conditions are favourable for alignment events to develop. A Strategic Alignment Warning would mean an alignment event is imminent or already occurring. The current Watch status allows time for preparation.
Conditions supporting development
Several atmospheric conditions are currently supporting the development of strategic alignment events:
- A recent organizational change has created uncertainty about priorities
- Multiple teams are working on initiatives that may overlap
- Leadership has used the word "alignment" in two consecutive all-hands presentations
- A consultant has recently delivered a report recommending "improved strategic alignment"
What to expect
If a strategic alignment event develops, expect: a meeting called to "align on priorities," a document describing the aligned priorities, a follow-up meeting to check on the alignment, and a period of approximately two weeks during which everyone describes their work as "aligned with the strategic priorities" regardless of whether it is.
Protective measures
When alignment language appears, ask: "What does alignment mean in this context, and how will we know when we have it?" This question is the most effective protective measure against alignment events. It forces specificity, which is the natural enemy of vague alignment language.
