We are in the AI-powered everything era. Products are AI-powered. Strategies are AI-driven. Workflows are AI-enhanced. Decisions are AI-assisted. The phrase has become so common that it is now applied to things that contain a basic algorithm, a spell-checker, or a dropdown menu.
When AI-powered is accurate
AI-powered is accurate when a system uses machine learning, large language models, or other AI techniques to perform a function that would otherwise require human judgment or that could not be performed at scale without the technology. The AI is doing real work. The label is earned.
When AI-powered is a marketing decision
AI-powered is a marketing decision when the "AI" component is a rule-based system, a statistical model, or a feature that has existed for years under a different name. The label has been applied because it is currently associated with innovation and investment, not because the technology has changed.
This is not necessarily dishonest. It is a reflection of how language works in periods of technological change. The word "AI" is currently doing the work that "digital," "smart," and "intelligent" did in previous eras.
The workplace version
In the workplace, "AI-powered" has entered the vocabulary of strategy documents and all-hands presentations. "We are building an AI-powered organization" is a phrase that can mean many things: that the organization is investing in AI tools, that AI is being used in specific processes, or that the organization wants to be associated with AI without having made specific commitments.
The useful question is always: "What specifically is the AI doing, and what is different because of it?"
The honest version
When someone says "AI-powered," the honest translation is usually one of: "we use AI tools," "we are exploring AI," "we have added AI features to an existing product," or "we want to be associated with AI." Each of these is a different statement. Knowing which one is meant is useful.
The question: "What specifically does the AI do in this context?" is the most useful question you can ask when you encounter "AI-powered." The answer will tell you whether the label is accurate or aspirational.
